This week the web world's favourite topic of discussion is LonelyGirl15, and her phenomenal rise to popularity on YouTube. So phenomenal in fact, that she had over 23,000 subscribers - the second most popular YouTube feed of all time. As her pseudonym suggests, the video blogs (29 in total) talk about her life as a teenager, her parents, boyfriends etc. However, this week she has been outed as a fake, invented by a Hollywood talent scout agency Creative Artists Agency. Today, Silicon Valley Watcher claims to have uncovered her real identity too.
The agency has now come clean and left a message to all LonelyGirl15's fans, "We are amazed by the overwhelmingly positive response to our videos; it has exceeded our wildest expectations. With your help we believe we are witnessing the birth of a new art form."
WebTwitcher is inclined to think that social networking sites are fast becoming a breeding ground for clever corporate marketing and PR stunts. It will be interesting to see how the communities respond to the corporate giants. Hopefully in a manner similar to the Facebook uproar.
