YouTube to get film rental service

YouTube is to start an online movie rental service, according to rumours coming out of Hollywood. iTunes and other sites already have deals struck, but bringing it to the world’s most popular streaming website is sure to make a few people lots of lovely money.

As yet agreements on pricing and release dates haven’t been struck, but if it’s anything like the deals involving iTunes, Amazon and CinemaNow, we’ll be looking at prices between $1.99 and $3.99 in the States, with a 24-hour viewing period for each flick.

So far Lionsgate, MGM, Warner and Sony have agreed ad revenue-sharing deals with YouTube and are the furthest along in negotiating. Right now it’s all very hush-hush, but as soon as more news breaks you’ll know.
