Yahoo! set to scrap GeoCities

Yahoo! is set to scrap GeoCities, the pre-Web 2.0 DIY website which it bought for $4.6bn back in 1999. The internet services company posted the news in a statement in their help pages yesterday.

"We have decided to discontinue the process of allowing new customers to sign up for GeoCities accounts as we focus on helping our customers explore and build new relationships online in other ways," the statement said. The site will be scrapped later this year.

GeoCities, however, was a product of its time and has been superceded by social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook, but it will be sad to see a monument of the dotcom boom die along with all of its beautifully horrendous web pages.
