Wikipedia users donate £4m to save online encyclopaedia

Wikipedia has received over £4m in donations from users after fears for the future of the popular online encyclopaedia. The site's founder Jimmy Wales made an appeal to users, warning that they could be forced to include ads to cover costs.

The site receives an estimated 254 million visitors per month and at least 50 per cent of them handed over hard earn dough to save Wikipedia in its current format. Over 100,00 people are reported to have pledged different amounts of money from £3 all the way up to £50,000.

Wikipedia has just 23 full-time staff members but over 150,000 volunteer editors. Wales has since issued a thank you note to all contributors outlining how the pledge funds will be utilized to further develop the site and improve the service.
