What to do when your mobile falls in water

Unless you have a Sony Xperia like the smartphone shown in our image, you face the possibility of dropping your phone into water and ruining it. Thankfully there are things you can do when your phone falls into water so there’s no need to panic unless the following fails to bring your phone back to life.

What you shouldn’t do

Before we get into the process of drying out your phone take note of the following things you shouldn’t do when your phone falls into water. First of all, never turn it on. Don’t press any buttons whatsoever. Don’t shake or tap the device either. Don’t take it apart even though there will be an obvious temptation to do this. The reason for this is that some phones have a Liquid Damage Indicator (LDI) which voids your warranty if it’s activated. Don’t blow the phone dry. That never works. Don’t heat it up either. You’ll cause more damage. The same goes for trying to cool the thing down, so no sticking it in the freezer as some hapless people have been known to do.

What you should do

There’s no definite method that will bring all phones back to life but these tips can help you salvage your phone when water gets to it. First of all, turn the thing off. Then remove any cases and screen protectors on it. If you can get to the SIM and microSD card without removing the phone’s case, take them out. Now you should use a cloth to dab the device dry. Don’t spread the liquid around but soak up as much as you can. You could use a vacuum to suck up the water if there’s excessive amounts of the stuff in the device but take real care if you go down this route.

Now what?

Now your phone will be ready for the final stages. Bury the phone in a ziplock bag that you’ve filled with uncooked rice. The rice will absorb the water but it might take 2 days to do this thoroughly. After 48 hours take the phone from the bag and restart it. If it doesn’t turn on, try recharging it before you panic that this method’s not worked. Try a replacement battery too if it won’t boot up. If you’re still stuck after all that, you might need to take it to a professional for assistance. If this sort of mistake is common with you, purchase a Sony Xperia device as they're waterproof.
