We didn't start the fire

Australia will be using Facebook and Twitter to give its communities early enough warning to escape bush fires, in a bid to prevent the sort of disaster like the one that killed 173 people in Victoria State back in February.

Local residents complained that there was almost no warning about the fires that ravaged whole towns, and now Victoria State head honcho John Brumby has decided to help people make their own decisions about what to do by speeding up the flow of information to local residents through Facebook and Twitter.

'We'll be providing more information to the community, like Twitter and Facebook - alternative means of communication to get the information out to the public,' said Brumby. 'So that they've got better information from a variety of sources and if they need to make a judgement to go early, they will go and they will go early.'
