Walking on water (and cornflour)

Last year New Scientist magazine announced its Green eggs and Cabbage competition for home experiments demonstrated on YouTube. Our favourite entry is from Chris Chiswell, who demonstrates how, for just a tenner, you can make a magic liquid that flows normally when it’s sitting still but goes hard when you hit it.

Armed with a couple of big bags of cornflour and a bucket, Chris makes a non-Newtonian fluid (you knew that, right?) – something that lets him run up and down on it, pour it and generally muck about in weird ways. This is proper Fun Science – expect a run on cornflour at your local cash and carry any day now…
