Virgin territory

A new download service is being launched on Virgin Media later on in the year that will mean that for a monthly fee, you can stream and download songs from the entire Universal records back catalogue. If it resembles Sky's plan to do exactly the same thing, then that's because it's exactly the same thing.

There are also plans to integrate smaller independent labels into the service by the time it launches, and it will be helping to combat piracy, by educating 'file sharers about online piracy and raise awareness of legal alternatives.' Good luck with that.

Virgin Media's chief executive Neil Berkett was bullish about the new service. 'In terms of both convenience and value, our new music service will be superior to anything that's available online today and provides a fair deal for both consumers and artists.'
