Unreal Engine 3 trailer game 'possible'

Remember the video of Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 that we showed you the other day? Well, there was lots of speculation that what we saw could be replicated on anything but the highest end PC, running two or even three top of the range Graphics cards, and that we’d have to wait until the next generation of consoles to see graphical goodness like that.

The other issue on the agenda was whether we’d ever get to play the game featured in the video, although we’re not entirely sure why; it seemed like a hackneyed load of old last gen nonsense, riffing shamelessly on Gears of War and other games based on dystopian futures, featuring grizzled anti-hero protagonists. In any case, Mark Rein from Epic has said that it’s perfectly possible, even though it’s not currently in development.

‘I'm not going to deny that that's possible, but at the same time, if we hadn't had built that technology demo, then we wouldn't have been able to build Gears of War,’ said Rein. ‘It's like, once we build a technology demo and learn how to do things a certain way, it then enables us to do more of that. So I don't want to deny that such a scenario is possible, but it's not currently.

‘What we've done in the past is that we draw the line with the console generations. I don't want to pigeon-hole Unreal Engine as a console-only technology - it's also mobile, handheld, and PC technology. But so far, that's how it works.

‘When these new ultra-mass market home entertainment devices come out and set a new bar, that's when you'll see us clicking over to 'Unreal Engine 4′ - which will support those features and who knows what else.’
