The Walt Disney Company has announced that the co founder and chaiman of Twitter, Jack Dorsey is to be nominated for their board of directors, no doubt as they try and stay apace of twists and turns of a shifting media landscape.
“Jack Dorsey is a talented entrepreneur who has helped create groundbreaking new businesses in the social media and commerce spaces,” said Disney CEO Robert A. Iger. “The perspective he brings to Disney and its Board is extremely valuable, given our strategic priorities, which include utilizing the latest technologies and platforms to reach more people and to enhance the relationship we have with our customers.”
Dorsey is one of the best known executives in the tech industry. Beyond his role at Twitter, he is the co-founder of Square, a company that offers credit card payment services to small businesses, and a key player in the new media zeitgeist. Shareholders will be able to vote on his selection at the company's annual meeting on 18 March. Dorsey would become the youngest member of the Disney board, an asset no doubt in itself. Worth at least $1bn after Twitter’s recent stock market flotation, Dorsey is certainly not in need of the salary, so perhaps he sees something in the company that excites his creative business streak
Dorsey said, “I am honoured and humbled to join the Disney board. Disney is a timeless company, one we all grow up learning from and admiring.”
He went on to post a tweet quoting Walt Disney “I only hope we don't lose sight of one thing—that it was all started by a mouse.”
Well he’s certainly come a long way from his first ever tweet in 2006: "just setting up my twttr", which was of course the world’s first tweet. It remains to bve seen what impact he has on Disney’s future.
