Tweets from Heaven: the Pope gets Twitter account

So the Pope has finally caved and taken to Twitter. Contraception and women priests are apparently still subject to the vagaries of tradition, but the internet is fair game it would seem. With every politician and public figure, no matter how instinctually ill suited it is to their character leaping enthusiastically aboard the Twit bandwagon, even the Pope in his ivory golf buggy has realised the benefits of reaching the digital faithful.

His Twitter handle has been revealed as @pontifex. "The handle is a good one. It means 'pope' and it also means 'bridge builder'," said Greg Burke, senior media advisor to the Vatican who may want to chat to the gay community about just how proactive Benedict is in his bridge building.

The tweets will be hitting cyberspace in Spanish, English, Italian, Portuguese, German, Polish, Arabic and French with other languages set to follow. He will not be discussing the latest episode of X Factor though and the tweets will come from the contents of his weekly audience, Sunday blessings and homilies on major Church holidays. They will also include reaction to major world events, such as natural disasters.

The Catholic church is not known for short sharp, punchy pronouncements so it will be interesting to see how God’s Rottweiler adapts to 140 characters. Or his aides rather as it is no secret that they will be doing most of the writing.

There is an interesting detail in the story though. Papal pronouncements are deemed ‘infallible’ with a profoundly becoming modesty. But just in case old Benny gets sozzled on the communion wine and starts drunkenly flirting with Kim Kardashian, a caveat has been built into the process. Apparently his Tweets are to be viewed as ‘private conversation’ rather than pronouncements. No logical backflips there then.

But even with1.2 billion Catholics worldwide – the chances of His Holiness beating out the likes of Lady Gaga in the followers stakes is slim. Sign o the times.
