The price of Angry Birds these days!

Ah, it's an annual ritual - the rash of media stories about the updating of the 'inflation basket'. This is the imaginary trolleyfull of goods economists use to calculate how much prices have risen. To take account of changing consumption, they update the items in the basket every year.

And this year is a bit of a tech bonanza. Smartphones and their apps have been added to the basket, meaning if Angry Birds were to go up to £2 it'd affect the inflation rate, which is pretty neat. Fees for dating websites, remarkably enough, are also now in the basket.

What's been taken out? The BBC has a whole list, but our favourite has to be 'Vet fees for spaying a kitten.' Do people have fewer kittens now, or have we all stopped getting them spayed?
