The latest on the new Wii Nintendo console

Have you heard the rumours about a new Wii Nintendo console? The Wii 2 is expected to be released some time in early 2012, but we're hoping for a sneak preview before then...

When the original Wii was released, it changed the face of gaming forever, and appealed to many non-traditional and first time gamers. It's no surprise then that the industry is waiting with baited breath to see what Nintendo have in store for us this time! The new console has been referred to by the code name 'Project Cafe', and also the more suggestive 'Wii HD'.

So what do we know about the device itself? In truth, very little. Nintendo haven't confirmed anything about the new console, other than a short statement that says: "We will show a playable model of the new system and announce more specifications at the E3 Expo, which will be held June 7-9, 2011, in Los Angeles."

There are rumours that the console will boast a custom-built triple-core IBM PowerPC chipset, a revamped version of AMD's R700 GPU architecture, and support for 1080p.

Multiple sources have claimed that the Wii 2 will be "significantly" more powerful then either the XBox or the Playstation 3, and that it will be fully compatible with Wii's back catalogue of games.

In light of this announcement by Nintendo, prices for the Wii have been slashed to just £99 - perhaps making room on the market for a new and improved Wii, aimed at more hardcore gamers as well as the casuals.
