Steve likes it large

Steve Job's guest appearance on this morning's Apple press call was mostly devoted to slating competitors rather than giving any clues about upcoming Apple products. But in his slagging, Steve did in fact give a big clue about what Apple's next big thing wouldn't be.

Rumours have swirled, as rumours do, recently about Apple introducing a seven-inch mini brother or sister to the iPad. Such a tablet would be a little cheaper and more portable than the current iPad, and would compete more directly with e-readers like Amazon's Kindle - as well as that incoming slew of 7-inch Android tablets.

Well, you can basically forget about that. While this morning's call contained slams against many of Apple's competitors, The Steve saved his most damning criticism for the upcoming Android tablets - not so much for their running Android, as much as their size. It turns out Steve thinks anything less than ten inches isn't worth having (oo-er).

According to Steve, seven inches of screen 'isn't sufficient to create great tablet apps, in our opinion. While one could increase the resolution of the display to make up for some of the difference, it is meaningless unless your tablet also includes sandpaper, so that the user can sand down their fingers to around one quarter of their present size.'

So that's the Samsung Galaxy Tab, with sandpaper included, out November...
