All you need to know about Digital SLR Cameras

Digital SLR cameras abound the shops, but are they really worth trading in your trusty point and shoot for? Most photographers agree that if you want to achieve really professional quality shots, then a DSLR camera is a must. But, before you go out and spend a fortune on something you don’t understand and don’t think you have a use for, read on.

What is a DSLR Camera?

The main difference between your standard point and shoot camera and a digital SLR is that DSLR cameras allow you to see exactly what you’re shooting. With the aid of mirrors, light is reflected directly from the lens to the viewfinder. This means that the image you see, when framing the shot, is identical to the image exposed on the sensor. Because most point and shoot cameras have one lens for framing the shot, and another lens for exposing the image, the image you think you’re capturing is always slightly different to the end result.

Why do we need DSLRs?

DSLRs are also superior to point and shoot digital cameras because they also allow much more scope for adapting to specific situations. By attaching a variety of lenses and filters to a DSLR, your camera can be set up for a particular photographic need. For example, wide-angle lenses can be used for landscape shots, and telephoto lenses can be attached to shoot something far away in greater detail.

Lenses and Filters

When the human eye and brain process what you see, they alter reality. Therefore, in order to make an image appear more as you imagine it, use filters to compensate. With filters you can improve a shot by adjusting the contrast, colour, and highlighting etc. Filters also enable you to add artistic flare to your images, so you don’t have to simply recreate what you see and can achieve something more abstract.

If you’re serious about becoming a better photographer, then buying a DSLR and various accessories is a great idea. However, don’t expect to instantly achieve amazing, professional photos. It takes practice, experience and skill to use them to their best advantage. Digital SLR cameras are a great tool, but be prepared to work hard to get the best out of them.
