Segway boss dies riding invention over cliff

Here’s one for the irony files: The head of Segway company, which manufactures those funny two-wheeled machines you can whizz about the place on, has died after riding one of his own contraptions off a cliff and into a river.

Multi-millionaire businessman Jimi Heselden, who was 62 years old and worth £166million, was inspecting the grounds of his North Yorkshire estate on a more robust country version of the machine when he fell. He was found lying dead alongside his Segway by a passer-by in the Boston Spa area, at around 11.40am on Sunday.

‘Police were called at 11.40am yesterday to reports of a man in the River Wharfe, apparently having fallen from the cliffs above,’ said a typically stilted spokesman for West Yorkshire Police. ‘A Segway-style vehicle was recovered. He was pronounced dead at the scene. At this time we do not believe the death to be suspicious.’
