When Radiohead released their album In Rainbows on a “pay-what-you-like” basis for digital download, opinion was divided on whether it was a brilliant move to get the music out to fans, commercial suicide, or both. Now a survey by internet monitoring company Comscore suggests that only 38% of downloaders paid any money at all for the album.
Of those who did pay, the average price was $6 (about £3), and American downloaders were slightly more generous than their non-US counterparts. People seem to have taken iTunes pricing as a rough guide, with 12% willing to pay between $8 and $12 (making up most of the revenue).
Have you got your copy yet? How much did you pay? Come on, own up…
