Tech sounds you don’t hear anymore

How long has it been since you heard the old Nokia ringtone? You know the one that sounds like the ice cream van is arriving. When Nokia’s classic mono ringtone “Kick” was heard at every bus stop and on every street in the land, snake was considered a great game to play. (You know that old game where you try to make sure a dotted line doesn’t hit itself).

The distinctive sound of a 56k dial up modem burbling into life made you feel like something was happening. It beeped and burbled for a while like a kettle on the boil and then finally allowed you to access the internet at about the same pace as an asthmatic geriatric with a heart condition. Those were the days.

The iPod click wheel sound really gave you the impression that you were accessing something special. It’s no coincidence that it reminded most of us of the clicking sound associated with a combination lock as that’s what Apple were going for. It’s been a while since we’ve heard that sound.

The dot matrix printer was so loud that offices often had separate rooms to house those that were used for long print runs. This is a noise that’s not missed in modern offices.

The click and clack of a typewriter isn’t a noise anyone misses. Nor do we miss the need to fix the machine as you go or all the mistakes that need correcting. This is definitely a machine that should only be seen in museums from now on.
