Peek, formerly known as Txtbl, are set to launch a $100 Lo-Fi BlackBerry in the US on September 14. The lightweight wafer thin phone comes in three different colours: cherry, aqua and grey, and features a full QWERTY keyboard.
Users can check their email via GMail, Yahoo and AOL for $19.95 a month but that is that. The device can't be used to make phone calls, doesn't feature a web browser, an MP3 player, or have text messaging capabilities.
While the simplicity of Peek's BlackBerry may be key to it carving out a niche for itself in a highly competitive market, the price of mobile email devices has come down considerably in the last year. For another $100 you could buy an iPhone. Watch this space.
