One government website to rule them all

The internet - it's not all drunken photos and LOLcats. It can actually be used to deliver important government services. In fact, the government's portfolio of web services has expanded so that it's now running over 750 sites.

But maybe not for long. The government is looking favourably at a new proposal, from its appointed digital guru Martha Lane Fox, to roll all Government websites into one super-service.

The idea, as far as we can tell, is that instead of having to go to different sites to renew a driving license, apply for benefits,or file tax returns - all with different user accounts and replicated information - there'd be a single site with all the different services built-in.

That sounds sensible, doesn't it? But we suspect privacy campaigners will have something to say about the implied sharing of data with different government departments...
