The BBC, ITV and Channel 4 have announced a joint Video on Demand service, hoping to “do for broadband what Freeview did for digital”. The service has the working title of Kangaroo, and will be launched in 2008.

VoD still has a hint of videophone-style failure to us. Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park put it best: “You were so busy thinking about whether you could do it, you never stopped to think about whether you should!”

After eight hours of staring at a computer screen from about 18 inches away, surely the last thing most of us want to do is go home and spend another two hours doing the same thing?
