New GTA soon?

In the world of pointless speculation, video games must be one of the industries that is most prone to tittle-tattle and hearsay, while in the world of video games, Grand Theft Auto most garner more comment based on nothing than any other series in history. The merest sniff of a hint of a trailer, screenshot or news of a new game is enough to send the world sliding at least one degree of its axis, literally killing thousands in the process. But we don’t care, as we must know every single thing about that game, and screw anything that gets in our way, right?

Right. So it’s only for GTA that we’d countenance paying any attention to flimsy predictions from analysts, who offer no evidence for their findings and seem to be looking for headlines as much as doing their jobs. What the hell, eh? He’s talking about the possibility of GTA V, so let’s sit back and listen.

‘Assuming GTA V is in their fiscal ‘11 period as we have currently modelled, (Take-Two Interactive) should be highly profitable, and likely in excess of current street consensus,’ said Mike Hickey of Janco Partners. ‘With the RAGE engine built, the next GTA release should drop faster and require less development expense. Importantly, the Rockstar team is newly incentivized through profitability versus a unit sales approach.

‘We believe there is building suspension for a pre-E3 GTA V announcement. We expect nothing from Rockstar at this year's official E3 event.

‘We think the next iteration of GTA for console can significantly outsell its predecessor, reflecting on the sales acceleration of the prior cycle GTA console iterations, an accelerating core gamer installed base (with an emphasis on PS3 installed expansion where GTA has historically dominated relatively).’
