Muggers nabbed thanks to Google Street View

Police in the Netherlands have
arrested two brothers on suspicion of theft thanks to photos on Google Street View which show the pair following their alleged victim.

A 14-year-old boy was mugged in the town of Groningen, just north of Amsterdam, last September by two men and later contacted the police after he found photos of his alleged assailants on Street View earlier this year.

Although all faces in Google's pictures are blurred the police in Groningen contacted the internet giant and asked if they could see original copies of the photos. A detective recognized the twin brothers from the photos and they were subsequently arrested on suspicion of theft.

Paul Eidanus of the Groningen police force said that it was the first time that Street View had been used by the Dutch law enforcement authorities in a criminal investigation. "For us, it is unique," he said.
