Get yourself a Motorola Defy in Ireland

Motorola are proving themselves to be something of a dab hand at churning out affordable mid-range smartphones these days, allowing them to claw themselves back into the front running group of big boys leading pack, and allowing them to focus some of their revenue into top of the range technology like the Atrix and the Xoom tablet.

The Defy is slightly pricier than their previous models, but you can immediately tell where your money is going. The slick design and well realised interface are definitely an improvement over their previous models, and given the quality of those phones that’s not an achievement to be sniffed at.

Measuring in at 59 x 107 x 13.4 mm, the Defy is one of the tidiest handsets we’ve seen for a while, and with a weight of just 118g it’s certainly a rival to the most lightweight phones on the market today. The 3.7 inch, 480 x 854 pixel display stands up against all but the most expensive phones, and the multi-touch capacitive screen makes navigation around the Android 2.1 Eclair driven menus a real joy to behold.

When it comes to performance, the Defy is driven by an 800MHz TI OMAP 3610 core processor and 512MB of RAM, so it stands up quite well to similarly priced competition. One thing we did notice that was a little bit annoying is that the phone will be considerably sluggish for the first five to ten minutes after turning it on, so if you’re the type of person who powers their phone down in the evening, be prepared for a bit of wait before it reaches maximum functionality.

All in all Motorola have done it again in delivering an excellent Android experience. Even if Motoblur isn’t to your liking, and it certainly seems to be divisive (although we are partial to it!), there’s so much more going on here that it’s impossible not to recommend it.
