Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton account details hacked

Some of the most famous names in US politics and entertainment have discovered that their personal accounts have been hacked and private information posted online. First Lady Michelle Obama, Vice-President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Republican Sarah Palin were among those hacked.

It’s a major embarrassment for US cyber-security and the Los Angeles Police Department are desperately trying to trace the culprits. The Attorney General and the Director of the FBI were also hacked, along with, in a nice piece of provocative teasing, the LAPD chief Charlie Beck.

Beck’s information was posted online, which immediately made the matter a priority for any LA cop who knows how to work a keyboard and mouse. "The incident is being looked at by detectives," the department told The Daily News. "His personal information was posted."

Among the showbiz victims are the Obamas’ favourite singers Jay-Z and Beyonce, Paris Hilton, Mel Gibson, Ashton Kutcher, Kim Kardashian, Britney Spears and Donald Trump. The information, labelled The Secret Files, has been posted to a website called Exposed, with a Russian server suffix. Details of victims’ addresses, Social Security numbers, bank accounts, credit card numbers and mortgages have been posted. Paris Hilton has a mortgage? Who knew?

The revelations were hardly headline news, although Jay-Z might not be too pleased that, according to the website, everybody now knows he has an American Express bill of $227,115. Michelle Obama’s image as a down-to-earth, all-American Mom can only be enhanced by the information that she carries store cards for The Gap and Banana Republic. The website sent her a message: "Blame your husband, we still love you, Michelle."

Although the initial motivation seems to have been to show-off the hacker’s ingenuity, it obviously demonstrates a serious breach of security that will alarm US defence operatives, already facing a cyber-war with Chinese hackers.
