We take a look at Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes

The Lego series of games has proven to be something of an unexpected hit for publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment since it debuted back in 2005. Since the launch of the first game in the series, Lego Star Wars: The Video Game, the range of games has gone from strength to strength and taken in some of the most iconic movie franchises in recent memory. The latest instalment is Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes.

What's in a name?

Serving as a sequel, obviously, to Lego Batman, the DC Super Heroes postfix goes a long way to explaining some of the most interesting features of Lego Batman 2. Rather than focusing solely on Batman and Robin, this time around there are countless characters from the DC universe who make an appearance, including fan favourites like Superman and Wonder Woman, Cat Woman, Batgirl, The Riddler, The Penguin, Harley Quinn, Lex Luthor and... well, you get the picture. In total there are more than 50 different playable characters on offer here.

But it's not the variety of characters that sets Lego Batman 2 aside from its predecessors in the Lego series, rather it's the variety of gameplay on offer. Those who have played previous games in the series will no doubt be familiar with the core gameplay mechanics underpinning the brawling, platforming, puzzler action, but new additions like driving across Gotham in the Batmobile, or powering up with a wide range of different suits really make a huge difference to how the overall experience plays out.

Additionally, some of the more annoying issues suffered by the series have been ironed out, such as unfair deaths due to poor camera angles (although this hasn't been completely solved in its entirety) and the repetitive nature of the gameplay.

So is it worth it?

All in all, Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes is far and away the best title in the Lego series. The whole gameplay engine has been tweaked and refined as to get rid of some of the biggest issues, while the addition of many new features makes for a massively enjoyable experience.
