Internet experts have hailed the creation of the domain name .tel as the most significant development in the history of the web since the launch of .com. The new domain name is being hailed as the internet's equivalent of a phone directory.
According to the Guradian, the .tel domain will allow companies to store different types of contact information online which will be available to users depending on when and where they log on to the service.
The UK company Telnic is overseeing the launch of the new domain name. Its chief executive told the Guardian that "The launch of .tel represents the most significant innovation in the domain name system since the advent of .com." The .tel address directs users to information contained on Domain Name Servers rather than local servers.
