Large Hadron Collider: is the end of the world nigh?
The end of the world is nigh! Tomorrow! Well that's if the fears over the £5billion Large Hadron Collider at CERN are to be believed. Scientists will fire two beams of subatomic particles together in an attempt to recreate the conditions just after the big bang.
But some boffins fear that the atom smasher will create a black hole which could swallow the earth from within. One egghead, Otto Rössler, has even gone as far as the European Court of Human Rights to try and halt the switching on of the Large Hadron Collider.
So is it time to write one final post on Facebook to all your mates and declare your undying love for that girl you fancy in accounts? While the Ghostbusters advised never crossing the beams the LHC experiment has been given the seal of approval.
If you're still confused over the nature of the research, scientist and part time rapper, Kate Mc Alpine, has come up with a four minute video, the Large Hadron Rap, which explains the lot. For anyone more interested in the whole doomsday idea check out the world being swallowed by a black hole.
