We see if we can find laptops for 100 pounds or less

When it was suggested to us that we try to find out just how cheap laptops can actually be bought for, without resorting to CraigsList or eBay, we jumped at the challenge. It really got us thinking about the current prices of laptops, with many netbooks available brand new for not much more than two hundred pounds, was it really going to be that difficult to find laptops for 100 pounds or less?

First of all we needed to lay down certain conditions in order to make this a reasonable task. Firstly, the laptops had to be in perfect working order and must be purchased from a company as opposed to a private trader. This certainly made things an awful lot more difficult, but it allowed us a little more focus in our search.

Now, before we go any further we would just like to say that if you're expecting good quality laptops here, you're going to be disappointed. Because of the price constraints, it's simply not possible to get anything more than a functioning laptop with specs along the same lines as your typical smartphone has these days. However for someone on an extreme budget who simply cannot do without internet access, each of the machines below will do the job (but not much else).

cheaplaptopcompany.com certainly lives up to its name, with no fewer than three laptops available for less than 100 pounds. Of the options available to us, we decided to go with the HP Compaq N400c, a laptop featuring the Intel Pentium Chip running at 800MHz, 256MB of RAM and a 20GB hard drive. With a 12.1" screen and a relatively contemporary chassis, it doesn't actually look as bad as you would expect, and is certainly capable of basic web browsing.

ukclearancecentre.com upped the game somewhat with their offer of an IBM Thinkpad R31 for £99.99. It features a 1.2GHz Celeron processor, 256MB RAM and a 20GB hard drive, along with a bright 14.1" screen. Not bad, but not really worth recommending either.

thelaptopcentre.co.uk had an even better offer on the table, with the Dell D400 12.1" laptop. It comes with a 1.4GHz Intel Pentium M processor, 512MB of RAM and a 20GB hard drive, and although the £99.99 price is skewed a little by the fact that there is no CD/DVD drive included the specs are actually quite good for the price.

If anything, this exercise shows that if you absolutely must have a laptop, there are options available to you, so keep your ear to the ground and keep an eye out on the sites we mentioned and you might just secure yourself a real bargain!
