iPhoning at the mouth

Can you hear the cyber-whispers? Put your ear to the screen, hold your breath, and perhaps you will hear a distant voice sounding something like a spirit trapped in this world, saying: 'the iPhone 5 is being released on October 21...' And if not, read on, as we're going to tell you all about it anyway.

The rumour of October 21 that's got us all on tenterhooks is based on a leaked note from a Best Buy store in the US in which an 'Apple fixture installation' is scheduled for that day at 6am. Enticing. My Next reports the leak thus, saying: 'Our tipster tells us that the request that a manager be on-hand at 6AM is out of the ordinary (they usually show up at 7AM for inventory), and that a similar arrangement was scheduled for the iPhone 4 launch.'

Apparently, Apple tend to launch products on Fridays, and October 21 is a Friday. But get this: the first iPod was released on October 23, 2001. So, if this rumour is correct, the launch will mark the iPod's tenth birthday. Double figures eh! Who'd have thought it? Yet still so small after all these years. Confusing.

And from the assembly line in Asia, hot spec speculation have it that the handset will boast a very slightly larger screen, a faster processor and a better camera. What's not to rejoice about? Hurrah for the iPhone 5, we say, throw anything else in the trash.
