White iPhone 4 now for sale in the UK

The Apple iPhone 4 was launched in the UK in June 2010. Now the white version of the iPhone 4 is finally for sale in the UK. Decisions, decisions... black or white? Apart from the colour, the features are the same. The iPhone 4 is available with 16 gigabytes of storage from £510 or with 32 gigabytes from £612.

The iPhone 4 is slimmer than previous models (and any other smartphone)with a depth of 9.33mm. It has the same strengthened glass coat on the back and on the front, with a stainless steel frame which also acts as an antenna (or aerial). Improved features in the iPhone 4 include retina display, multi-tasking and mail.

  • Retina display: Apple have increased the pixel density of the iPhone 4 to 326 pixels per inch, making text and graphics look smoother than before. This is good for reading as reading on mobile devices becomes more popular. Apple iBooks continue to be the best presented ebooks, even without the full range of choice that other ebookstores like Amazon have to offer. Along with the 3.5 inch screen and night mode which switches to white text on a black background, the iPhone 4 continues to be a great all round device and more portable than the iPad.
  • Multi-tasking: Now you can reopen recently used apps by double tapping the home button without waiting for the app to reload - and then return to your foreground app without draining the battery. You can switch to another app while waiting for tasks to complete, like uploading photos or downloading music. You can also receive updates from third-party apps without having to open the app. Music playing apps will keep playing in the background while you're using another app and VoIP connections stay active, allowing you to check your mail while still on a Skype call.
  • Improved mail: People with multiple email addresses will appreciate the improved email feature which shows all your inboxes in one feed. Threaded messaging has been added so messages that belong to the same conversation are grouped together, as in Gmail.

The iPhone 4 has two cameras, a VGA camera at the front for video calls and a five megapixel camera at the back for taking photos. 'FaceTime' allows you to flip from one camera to the other during a call as long as you have a strong Wi-Fi connection - so if you see something interesting while you're on a call, you can show them exactly what you're talking about by flipping over to the camera at the back.

The iPhone 5 is rumoured to come out towards the end of the year so unless you just have to have a white iPhone now, it might be worth waiting to see what comes next from Apple.
