Hacker sends out zombie apocalyspe warning alert

On October 30th, 1938, Orson Welles literally scared the bejesus out of American listeners when he performed the adaptation of H.G. Wells science fiction novel The War of the Worlds, making it sound like a news broadcast about an invasion from Mars that included fake news bulletins, fake sound effects with on-the- ground reports of descriptions of the invaders.

The notorious broadcast launched Welles into international stardom, while it showed the media of that day that they could manipulate an unsuspecting and often gullible public.

Something similar occurred again in the US on Monday - with almost zero results - when a TV talk show being aired in Montana was interrupted by news alert bulletin of a zombie apocalypse, with reports going out that "dead bodies are rising from their graves" in several Montana counties.

The alert also claimed the bodies were "attacking the living" and warned people not to "approach or apprehend these bodies as they are extremely dangerous."

Apparently a hacker/prankster managed to get inside the Great Falls affiliate KRTV and its CW station Emergency Alert System which was set up to warn citizens of traditional and natural disasters like fires, floods, tornados, more than the eventuality that there would be zombie apocalypses.

The KRTV network was later forced to apologize and air ‘this message did not originate from KRTV, and there is no emergency’, adding that ‘their engineers are investigating to determine what happened and if it affected other media outlets’.

While the zombie apocalypse didn’t generate any of the hysteria that War of the Worlds did, however the Great Falls Tribune did report that the hoax alert did cause at least four calls to police to see if the warnings had any basis.

We guess that the hacker was just one of those numerous fans of AMC’s popular post-apocalyptic TV series, The Walking Dead or it was social and behavioral experiment to see the number of people who could actually believe that zombies will overtake our world like in Resident Evil.
