Google goes green

Google.org, the charity arm of search engine giant Google, has launched a research effort aimed at supporting power generation from renewable sources. The RE<C initiative sensibly goes straight for the wallet, aiming to produce a gigawatt of electricity for less than it would cost to produce the same amount from coal-fired power stations.

The fantastically-monikered Dr Larry Brilliant, Google.org’s executive director, said the company hoped it would help to “spark a green electricity revolution”. After its much-criticised decision to censor search results on its Chinese site, it looks like Google can chalk one up in the “don’t be evil” column...
