Give the gift of Kindle

Got a Kindle? Then you'll have made the nasty discovery that books for it aren't much cheaper than regular books. How on earth are you going to afford to fill the thing up with material? It's not like you can ask your parents to buy you a bunch of e-books for Christmas - you'd have to give them your Amazon account password, and you don't want them poking around your Wish List...

Well, Amazon aren't stupid: they've realised this is going to prevent purchases, and they've done something about it. They're introducing a new 'gifting system' (why can't Americans just say 'giving'?) You can buy a Kindle book and 'send' it to any email address. If that email address matches an Amazon account with a Kindle, it'll be downloaded to the device in question automatically. If it's not, the recipient can read it on their iPhone, iPad, Android phone or, if all else fails, the Web.

We think this is a good thing. However, we also think a bunch of people with e-readers from other manufacturers - that aren't compatible with Amazon ebooks - will get sent Kindle books and have to read them on their computers, which they will rightly find quite annoying...
