Swiss pilot and inventor Yves Rossy became the first person to cross the English Channel with a jetpack after flying from Calais to Dover in just under ten minutes on his homemade contraption today.
The so-called FusionMan had postponed two previous attempts to cross because of adverse weather conditions, but was helped today by a strong tailwind which cut the almost two minutes off the predicted time.
Rossy hopes that other intrepid adventurers will soon follow in his footsteps: "With that crossing I showed it is possible to fly a little bit like a bird. I am full of hope there will be many in the near future."
So does it mean the end of the Chunnel with hordes of Londoners nipping over to France to pick up fresh baguettes, Roquefort and a bottle of Burgundy? Probably not, as Rossy's flying machine cost around £190K to build.
