Firefox reaches one billion downloads milestone

Firefox has reached the milestone of one billion downloads according to its creator Mozilla.

The total includes all versions of Firefox downloaded since it was first released back in 2004. Mozilla's popular web browser is now estimated to have a 31% per cent share of the global web browser market. Microsoft's Internet Explorer is still way out in front with a 60% share while Google Chrome, Apple's Safari and Opera have a 5% stake in the market.

Last year Mozilla entered the Guinness book of records for the most software downloaded in one day when Firefox 3.0 was downloaded over eight million times in 24 hours. The browser become an instant favourite with internet users when it was launched back in 2004 and Firefox 4.0 looks set to be launched later this year.
