Fat white phone

We waited, and waited, and doubted, and believed, and now, finally, the white iPhone 4 has gone on sale. No-one really understands why it took so much longer than the black model to get right, but Apple say the colour change throws up all sorts of issues with the iPhone 4's glass back that it didn't with previous models' plastic backs, notably the need for extra protection from the sun.

Fair enough, and kudos to Apple for sticking with it and finally bringing it to market. But it seems whatever they did to make it sun-proof had a downside. It turns out that the white iPhone 4 is 0.2mm thicker than the black model.

That might sound like nothing, and it's true that the white iPhone 4 is still a very, very thin phone. But it matters if you're in the market for a case, or if you already have one. Surprisingly, Apple isn't officially acknowledging the difference, admitting merely that 'Actual size and weight vary by configuration and manufacturing process.' This seems pretty weak to us. The difference is small enough that most cases should fit the not-so-tightie whitie just fine, but some tough cases - like the wonderful waterproof LifeProof case - might have trouble.

Buyer beware, basically. (BBB.)
