Facebook phone - not happening

The other day we reported that someone else had reported that Facebook were working on a mobile fine, spurred on by the success of Android and the exposure that the Windows Phone 7 was getting. Facebook denied everything but tech sites like TechCrunch and CNET were insistent that they knew something that Facebook weren’t letting on.

However, the site’s top man Mark Zuckerberg has conducted an interview with TechCrunch, in which he explains that Facebook are not working on any hardware, and that they’re not planning on even building their own operating system, let alone a phone.

‘At the end of the day, when people say ‘building a phone’ they actually can mean very different things,' he said. 'Internally, the way we talk about our strategy, it’s like the opposite of that. Our whole strategy is not to build any specific device or integration or anything like that. Because we’re not trying to compete with Apple or the Droid or any other hardware manufacturer for that matter.

‘There’s the Apple approach of really designing all the hardware…I’ll bet we’ll never do anything like that... 10 years down the road, maybe we’ll build our own operating system…but for now I think, everything is going to be shades of integration rather than starting from the ground up.’
