Facebook launches personalized usernames

Facebook has announced that users will be able to sign up for their own personalized web addresses on Saturday morning.

The popular social networking site announced details of the scheme last week which will allow users to have their name embedded in their account URL, e.g. www.facebook.com/johnsmith, but addresses will be handed out on a first come first serve basis.

The changes will come into place on Saturday morning from 5am and Facebook claims that the new system will make it easier for people to track down their friends and family.

The social networking giant spoke about the motivation behind the changes on the site's blog earlier today: "We're planning to offer Facebook usernames to make it easier for people to find and connect with you. When your friends, family members or co-workers visit your profile or pages on Facebook, they will be able to enter your username as part of the URL in their browser."

"This way people will have an easy-to-remember way to find you. We expect to offer even more ways to use your Facebook username in the future. Your new Facebook URL is like your personal destination, or home, on the web."
