Facebook for iPad released! Sort of!

Well, this is weird. Facebook have been promising for a while now to finally produce a proper app for iPad, rather than just sending iPad users to the main Facebook website - which isn't really touch-optimised. And now, the Facebook app for iPad has launched! Except, it hasn't.

Allow us to explain. Over the weekend, Facebook released a new version of their app for iPhone. It contained a couple of minor changes and general performance improvements. But it also contained something else - the iPad app. Tucked inside, in code form, like one of those crazy Russian dolls.

See, when the Facebook iPad app is released, the two apps will be available in a single package, as with many other iPhone-iPad combos. But though the iPad app isn't officially out yet, Facebook clearly couldn't be bothered to extract all the code to do an iPhone update. So, with a bit of jailbreaking, you can use the iPad app right now.

So how is it? Good, it seems. 'The navigation system is great,' reports TechCrunch. 'Unlike the iPhone app, the Facebook iPad app uses a left-side menu system that can be accessed by the touch of a button or the flick of the iPad screen. The app also makes great use of the pop-overs (overlay menus) found in other iPad apps. When you flip the iPad horizontally, the list of your online friends appears and you can chat with them as you do other things on Facebook. The photo-viewer aspect looks great — similar to the iPad’s own native Photos app. Places exists with a nice big map to show you all your friends around you. Etc.'

So if you're jailbroken, hit up TechCrunch and find out how to have a play yourself.
