Bloody New York - always two steps ahead. Here in London we're just getting used to our nifty new cycle hire scheme, but in New York they're proposing a similar scheme with a high-tech twist.

The proposed scheme, detailed this week by the New York City Department of Transportation, would include 10,000 bikes, double the current number in London. But what's more, New York's scheme will feature GPS and wi-fi enabled bikes with solar-powered parking stations.

Now, we doubt the bikes will actually have a built-in GPS with screen - our guess is it'd be used for tracking the bikes to prevent theft. Similarly, we doubt the wi-fi will be available to help users email from their iPads while cycling. But it's still good to see the growing trend of cycle hire getting a high-tech upgrade.
