What to know about Childrens laptops!

Children have become increasingly tech savvy, demonstrating incredible knowledge of computers. It's natural for parents to want to give their child the best start in life and children's laptops offer this.

When considering purchasing a laptop for a child you must take into account a few things, such as: what the laptop will be used for, the age of the child and where it will be used.

We would not recommend a laptop for a child under the age of 15, firstly due of security as children should not be allowed to use the internet unsupervised and secondly because the laptop may get damaged due to rough play.

When considering which laptop to buy you must consider what the laptop will be used for. If it is to help children with study then an internet connection is necessary to allow access to educational and informational websites.

All laptops nowadays come with wireless cards which allow them to use wifi enabled hot spots and home wifi connections. If the laptop is used for word processing, to write reports or design presentations then you need Microsoft Office. If you are on a very tight budget you can download OpenOffice, a free open source program that mimics the controls and functionality of Microsoft. For audio visual work a sound and video card is needed to ensure programs run smoothly and without problems.

To ensure this, make sure any laptop that will be required to run audio visual programs has a dedicated graphics card with at least 1GB of RAM. Avoid shared memory as this is unreliable and may result in ongoing issues with some programs.

Finally, one must consider insurance if the child is taking the laptop out of the home, to ensure extra peace of mind.
