Beta No More

Now, this is how you do it. Google has a terrible habit of keeping its services in Beta for years and years. But not Yahoo - with them it's all wham, bam, thank you ma'am. Just a few short months after Yahoo introduced the latest version of its Mail service - the world's most popular email provider, don't you know - they've officially upgraded and taken the 'beta' label off. All users will be getting upgraded in the next few days if they haven't manually done so yet.

So what do you get? Well, superficially the new Yahoo Mail looks a lot like the old, with a desktop-style folder list on the left which makes sorting and filing messages a breeze. Additions include better spam protection and the ability to send huge file attachments, which is handy. Most useful, though, is the ability to tweet or update Facebook from right within your email.

Will these changes be enough to keep Yahoo Mail at the top, or will Gmail finally win out? And does anyone even care? Who still uses email for anything other than newsletters anyway?
