We Check Out the Best Video Games for the Brain

Despite the fact that many people still see video games as nothing more than frivilous time wasters, the fact is that they can be incredibly useful when it comes to keeping the old grey matter in check. We've decided to compile a list of the best video games for the brain to ensure you've got plenty of excuses to keep gaming in the face of adversity!

Use It or Lose It

Although most of us tend not to give all that much thought to exercising our brains on a regular basis, there's certainly plenty of merit to keeping on top of things and challenging yourself on a regular basis.

With so many great games available these days across a wide range of different platforms, from home gaming consoles to social media platforms to smartphones and tablets, there's absolutely no excuse for you not to spend some time sharpening your wits and keeping yourself entertained into the process.

It would be impossible to compile a list of the best video games for the brain without taking a look at some of the most obvious ones, like the excellent Brain Training series for Nintendo's DS and 3DS, or Smart As... for Sony's handheld Vita system. Both games challenge players with increasingly difficult logic, maths and language based mini-games, with the aim to master them all and prove you've got what it takes to keep your brain in tip top condition.

But looking beyond those options, there are plenty of other titles out there that'll both challenge and entertain. One great example is the excellent Portal and Portal 2 from Half-Life developer Valve.

In these games, players will need to find their way to the exit of each level by creating portals and figuring out some incredibly challenging logic puzzles. With great writing and some genuinely hilarious moments, they're definitely worth taking a look at whether you're a hardcore gamer or not.

Indie Darlings

It's also worth taking a look at the blossoming independent gaming scene for some more of the best video games for the brain. Titles like Fez or FTL: Faster Than Light might look primitive, but they've been crafted in such a way as to ensure that you'll need your wits about you if you're going to succeed.

Tackling these titles is a sure fire way to keep yourself as sharp as a tack!
