In its latest move into serious office software, Google has added presentations to its Google Docs suite of office applications (which already includes word processing and spreadsheets). You can import from PowerPoint and, as with other Google Docs applications, collaborate with other people.
Oh, and of course it’s free. Coming from almost any other source this might make us expect something developed as a hobby project – possibly brilliant, possibly incredibly complex, almost certainly unsupported.
But we trust free stuff from Google when we wouldn’t from others – it doesn’t seem ridiculous to consider actually using this for work.
In the long run the idea that decent, functional basic software can be free to users might be as big a deal as the idea of collaborating online.
