Angry Birds head out into orbit

Bad news for productivity, great news for game addicts. A new version of Angry Birds has been launched across several platforms, including iPhone, iPad, Android, PC and Mac, with downloads starting at just 69p.

Angry Birds Space takes the irate avians out into space, where nobody can hear you squawk. There are 60 levels to the initial game, but more will be added as updates and as in-app extras.

Rovio, the company that created the Angry Birds franchise and has been counting the cash ever since, is understandably keen to promote the latest version. "This launch marks a huge step for us as a company," said chief executive Mikael Hed. "Our whole team and partners have really pulled together to bring out a fantastic array of exciting products and experiences. We hope that our fans will find all things Angry Birds Space as delightful as the Rovio family does."

Last time they counted, Rovio had sold 700 million downloads of the first 3 versions of Angry Birds, with Prime Minister David Cameron and President Barack Obama rumoured to be among those addicted. The new game should push the franchise through the 1 billion mark.

There are already plenty of game tie-ins available. "It's the first time we have everything available on launch day," Rovio’s Peter Vesterbacka told The Guardian. "Animation, toys, books, candy, everything. It's massive: most Hollywood movies don't have this. And this is just the first phase of our space programme. There is more to come."

The planet belongs to the Angry Birds. We just live on it.
