The Amazon Kindle - a great holiday companion

If you love nothing better than a good book and you've been mulling over the latest e-reader gadgets, this might be the time to take a closer look at the Amazon Kindle.

Let's face it, many of us now turn to Amazon instead of high street bookshops when we want to buy a book, so it makes perfect sense for them to produce their own e-reader, and for us to at least consider it, given the access to more than half a million titles!

The gadget itself is great to handle as it's lighter than the average paperback and thinner than a magazine. And if you are used to laptops and netbooks toasting your knees, you'll be pleasantly surprised to discover that the Kindle never feels hot.

The reading area is around six inches without the glare of an LCD screen, so it really does feel as though you are reading a printed page. And you can read just as easily in bright sunshine as you can in your living room. Amazon puts all this down to 'E Ink Pearl technology', and it does work remarkably well.

Another plus point is the battery life - it can keep going for about a month on a single charge if you remember not to run the wireless connection when you are not using it. If you prefer to keep your wireless on, a charge will give you up to 10 days of use which is ample if you're going off on holiday for a week.

The Amazon Kindle has Wi-Fi built in anyway, but the free 3G wireless version is particularly handy because you don't have to worry about any internet contracts, you can just download books wherever you are, round the clock. There is room to store an impressive 3,500 books - which makes it just that little bit easier to pack your suitcase!
