Is 2011 the best year ever for online shooters?

It's simply madness on the online shooters front this year. The awesome Crysis 2 dropped in April giving fans some of the most beautiful visuals ever seen in online shooters blended with Crysis's signature on the fly power-up switching system.

Then came the Gears of War 3 beta, for the gamer who likes their men meaty, their women armed to the teeth and their online interactions close, brutal and done with sawn-off shotguns. And now, when we were just finished picking then shotgun pellets out of our unmentionable regions, trailers started popping all around the internet for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was the Goliath of online shooters when it came out back in 2009, selling nearly twenty million copies, and we can expect it's sequel to have similar gargantuan sales, as people flock to get the arcade-style online experience that the Call of Duty titles have absolutely perfected. There is a reason why Modern Warfare two sold so many copies!

Even one of these titles would make any year a special one for fans of online shooters, and the thought of the three of them being released within mere months of each other is enough to make even the dourest gamer squeal like a giddy schoolgirl. And then on top of that DICE mentioned that they'd be releasing Battlefield 3 this year - and then those giddy schoolgirl screams raised an octave or two! Destructable environments? Check. Sixty-four player games? Check. Anything else you might want, like say Battlefield's unique team-based objective based online combat? It goes without saying that that's a check! How about something really cool, like jet fighter combat? No problems! Battlefield 3 can be preordered at ea.com/battlefield3 for sixty of your finest dollars, and will be released in sometime in the third quarter of the year.

Between the four of these titles, it's going to be a hell of year for online shooters!
